Piano Day "celebrates the piano and everything around it: performers, composers, piano builders, tuners, movers and most importantly, the listener,” as described by its founder, Nils Frahm. It's held on the 88th day of the year, March 28th, which references the 88 keys on a modern piano. This year, the Sydney Opera House live-streamed a 50-minute program in celebration of Piano Day, which featured a number of performances and exclusive interviews, showcasing both the piano and the diversity of musicians that have walked through the Opera House’s Stage Door.
I was honoured to be commissioned by the Opera House to write the musical 'theme' of this broadcast; a short excerpt of piano music which accompanied the title sequences and credits. I really enjoyed this short project and being able to work as a professional, as well as working with a budget to involve a few colleagues and produce the recording. Performed by Scott McDougall and mixed by Jerome Blazé, you can hear the full recording at 49:56 of the video below.
The program was a great success and included performances by Jon Hopkins, Margaret Leng Tan, Joep Beving, Andrea Lam, and Simon Tedeschi - I highly recommend checking it out! It's especially important to support digital initiatives like this during these difficult times for musicians and the arts.
Stay happy and healthy.
