Ben Robinson is a promising young composer and graduate of the Sydney Conservatorium of Music, where he was awarded the Raymond Hanson Memorial Prize for excellence in composition. Under the guidance of his tutors including Paul Stanhope, Michael Smetanin and Ben Carey, Ben has developed a passion for chamber music and a style that is rich in rhythmic excitement. Ben’s works create an engaging musical trajectory from start to finish, and his agile and colourful compositions appeal to a wide audience of listeners both with and without a classical education.
Despite the effects of the global pandemic, last year Ben was commissioned by Ensemble Apex to compose Binary Ties for their 2020 digital season; by the Sydney Opera House to compose the title music for their Piano Day celebration broadcast; by new-music collective Konzertprojekt, composing Changing Ways for flute and piano; and by the Port Macquarie Hastings Choristers, composing One Song in celebration of their 30th Birthday Gala.
In 2021 Ben has already been commissioned as part of The ANAM Set to compose a new work for violinist Lynda Latu, and by flautist Emilia Antcliff to write a new work for flute and electronics. He has also been accepted into Ensemble Offspring’s 2021 'Hatched Academy’ composer development program and the Australian Youth Orchestra's composition program.
In previous years Ben has been the winner of Ensemble Apex’s Call-For-Scores, the winner of AMEB NSW’s Centenary Fanfare Competition, and placed second in Arcadia Winds’ Wind Quintet Competition. Ben’s music has been performed in local festivals including Vivid Sydney and Extended Play, as well as internationally, including the U.S., the Netherlands, Switzerland, Sweden, Spain, and the Asia Saxophone Congress in Shanghai.
Ben also has a passion for living music and supporting the creation of music events, particularly those that showcase young musicians. He holds an administrative position with Ensemble Offspring, who champion these values in a professional capacity, and is a core member of Konzertprojekt, a small collective of emerging composers who curate concerts of chamber, audiovisual and electroacoustic music. In 2020 Ben designed and produced Konzertprojekt’s online series ‘Unspoken’, which digitally premiered four new works by emerging composers.
Originally from the coastal town of Port Macquarie, Ben now lives in Sydney to pursue his freelance music career, and continues to build a reputation as a passionate and dedicated composer.
“Ben’s dedication and love for music speaks strongly with every note he writes.”
- Sam Weller, Artistic Director of Ensemble Apex
